3D Doctor Who Is Coming

The BBC is planning to use stereoscopic 3D to try to attract younger viewers to the new series of Doctor Who. A 40-second 3D trailer has been commissioned to showcase the arrival of a new actor, Matt Smith, playing The Doctor

Red Bee Media made the commercial, with effects and grading work completed by The Mill. The promo was shot in 2D and is being converted to 3D by the Soho facility.

The trail will be shown in cinemas and at external promotional screening events across the country in March under the banner of Meet a Monster.

If it was shot in 2D and is then converted, can any program be converted I wonder?

Any program shot in true 1080p HD can be converted, but it is expensive and very time consumming.

WHY?????????????????!???????!!!!!

anything shot on film can be made HD, so that means any movie can, its just lo res video that cant atm!

Yup. Celuloid film is HD. 1080p was the choice when they went for digital HD because it was enough to keep the quality in celuloid films.

There is a controversy about up-resing regular film to 3-D or using special equipment for filming (which is difficult to use and expensive).

I'm in the use the special equipment group, because I've seen stuff converted to 3-D (like the beginning of Harry Potter at the iMax) and stuff like Avatar which used the 3-D cameras, and hell yes, there is a huge difference.

But for a 40 second Doctor Who promo, I don't think it really matters, considering the show won't be done in 3-D.

I'm personally anti-3D conversion, however if it is done well, I don't mind if something is made from the start in 3D. The reason being is the time it takes. There was a film I wanted to see that was supposed to come out a few months ago and because they are converting the whole thing to 3D now it wont come out until 2011

I remember reading something about the all the Star Wars movies being 'converted' to 3d and then never saw another thing about it. I'm skeptical that it will really add anything to the experience. I've never seen a 3 thing that didn't wind up giving me a headache.

It's only saying that a 40 second trailer will be created/converted - not the entire series.

My guess is that they'll put it in front of some of the many 3D movies which are coming to theatres this season.

I'm not anti-3D but ... I see why avatar was shot in 3D (they wanted to show off "a bit") but to frank, IMO it's not worth the fuss they make about it, and if children don't watch something because it's not in 3D then I don't care about them. I think DW isn't about great special effects but a great story. And IMO that's what films like avatar are lacking in the first place.

i cant say im excited about 3D either!

2d feels 3d in a good way 3d often ends up feeling unrelalistic with things thrown on top of screens

As far as converting the Star Wars films to HD, it's been rumored for years and apparently George Lucas has been convinced finally by Avatar that it can be done well. In the case of Star Wars I wouldn't mind this since there are no more films coming out in the immediate future, you're not waiting for anything new, just waiting for it to presented differently.

George Lucas had the opening shots of "A New Hope" converted to 3D years ago. It's a technique which he expects to eventually used but right now, I'm sure he's a bit sick of Star Wars.... and even sicker? of his whining fans.

They whined when he made the special editions (even though they're now clearly better).

They whined about Jar Jar who really wasn't that much worse than a whole heap of Ewoks - and they whined about Jake Lloyd - and the concept of midichlorians...

When he reduced Jar Jar's presence, they whined about Anakin and Padme's romance (even though most of the whiners probably didn't know what romance was).

They even whined about episode 3 which IMHO is as good as, perhaps better than Episode 5.

I think George needs a break - Red Tails perhaps (well, for sure).

i wined about the latest 3 movies being shit, doesnt george lucas look tired?

LOL - that last comment made my day.

:)

i loved parts 4-6, but 1-3 where awful, i verified this be watching them back to back again and im still in the belief they are made with marketing in mind first (computer games, action figures, toys etc.) rather then as movies first, the love story sucked, jar jar binx needed totally cutting from the film, and it wasnt very star wars (looking at parts 4-6) :)im in no hurry forthem to make parts 7-9, maybe after lucas is gone and someone else is "driving".
