BBC One Boss Wants Longer Runs for Hit Shows Like Doctor Who?

BBC One controller Danny Cohen has hinted that he would like popular British dramas to have longer runs. Whereas the majority of US dramas run from 22 to 25 episodes per year, the British dramas usually have much shorter runs of 6 or 13 episodes, as is the case with Doctor Who.

In recent years, some shows like Casualty and Holby City have extended their runs to become nearly year-round productions, but these are the exception rather than the rule. And while 52 episodes per year would probably be too much, it might be possible to extend some shows into the early 20′s range.

Obvious candidates include Doctor Who, which is becoming increasingly profitable but runs for only 13 episodes per year, plus a Christmas special. Hustle and the channel’s many crime dramas could also potentially stretch out across the year, but this would be a major change to the way that the BBC operates.

I would love for this to be the case, but if it would lower the quality, I'm happy to stick with 13.

Im a sinical bugger, but i remember RTD saying, if they cut the budget even slightly, then they would make more episodes, to get more money too spread thinly between episodes...so maby hes cutting budgets...would make sence, since moffats made a BIG point about raising money via events and merch

Initially a good idea but quality would probably decline, and it takes long enough to film as it is.

if quality declined, the show would end so that wont happen, the idea is the BBC commission less crappy shows and longer runs of good ones. i think the length may become 30 mins long, but 25 eps will do :)

I would like them to keep the same quality so lets say 17 episodes and a Christmas special that's 18 a year, sounds good?

Oh and if this goes ahead, increasing episodes I mean, I will kiss Danny Cohen.

I think 18 would be a good number, the entire 4th series with the specials was 18 episodes and all together it's a pretty good run!

I think maybe 15 a year + a christmas special would be a good run per year... too many episodes might lower the quality, and mean more "filler" episodes.

I wish Hustle would run for more episodes, but the next series will unfortunately be it's last :( Also, while I love Doctor Who so much, there is sometimes too much of a good thing.
