Doctor Who 2012 Reduced Season? The Truth Finally Revealed!

Reading this interview with Steven Moffat, I spotted something that confirms with what I have been saying all along...

Moffat: ...we are airing in 2012. The only thing that’s happening is that we’re moving a bit later... There’s lots of reasons for that that will become clear quite soon... It is certainly not a reduced episode count. Do you think the BBC would really let that happen? With an average audience of 10 million?... Doctor Who’s international profile is huge. It’s never been more successful. You’re not going to reduce a show like this. The opposite is going to happen, in fact...

So there you have it, and what he means is this - Series 7 will not start in the Spring of 2012, Doctor Who is moving to the autumn. Series 7 will start in about 12 months time, this means series 8 to be transmitted over the 50th Anniversary date, and its a Saturday too!

interesting but why was it said otherwise earlier. I kind of wonder how it will be expanded. Maybe there will be longer episodes.

i suspect the "short season" rubbish earlier this year was just bad communication, or deliberate for publicity

So does that mean 14 episodes (series + Xmas) in 2012, then another 14 in 2013?

i assume 14 a year as normal, as i have always said, and moff agrees, DW is one of the top BBC shows, cutting episodes is stupid!!!

I'd wondered whether they were scheduling it so it'd run over New Year and into winter 2013, which would explain the 'fewer episodes next year' thing.

few eps is rubbish, i have always maintained that, and as long as DW is on top, always will :)

I agree, I always knew they where going to move doctor who to the autumn ever since they announced the split for series 6.

I just can't see them reducing episodes with the popularity Doctor Who is gaining world-wide, especially not since they made such a big fuss promoting Doctor Who in America.

Things would be different however when Matt Smith and/or Steven Moffat leaves (which I hope is still a long time away).

Perhaps it is just moving later in the year because of the London Olympics

They could do 6 episodes in Summer or Autum next year take a break show the xmas episode then continue with 7 episodes in early 2013 and have the 13 episode series in Autum 2013...

So that would mean 7 episodes late next year
7 episodes early 2013
and 13 episode Min/Late 2013
So 20 episodes in 2013?

i think they are moving it for 3 reasons - 1) DW always was autumn in the classic days. 2) makes the 50th celebrations right 3) so it dosent overlap with sherlock (and maybe more too)

When we've had a succession of contradictory announcements, it's a little disingenuous to wait until the first one that suits you comes along and then describe it as "the truth finally revealed".

Knowing the BBC, you can probably guarantee that some idiot will announce the complete opposite within a week.

The BBC and the DW team make great TV but are quite incompetent at handling publicity.

As for Moffat asking "do you think the BBC would ever allow a reduced episode count with such a popular show?", looks like we're whitewashing over 2009.
