With a couple of independent films already completed, including supernatural horror Oculus alongside SF icon Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica), Gillan is proving that the talents she displayed as Amy Pond over four years and two and a half series of Doctor Who will continue to grace our screens for some time to come. Getting cast in a major Hollywood blockbuster like Guardians of the Galaxy, however, is recognition on a whole other scale.
The film, due out next year, is the wildest, most SF-filled entry so far in Marvel Entertainment’s ambitious series of graphic novel adaptations, and will feature more aliens and less Earth than ever before. Gillan’s exact role remains unconfirmed, but, even though she isn't going to be the twelfth Doctor (probably), speculation will be rife.

I'm not sure if the photo depicted has any connection with her new role in Guardian's of the Galaxy.
My research shows its over two years old :

It's just supposed to illustrate Gillan herself. Not her character.
