John Barrowman speaks about Jack and River spin-off.

Over a week after it ended and little things are still filtering out of the aftermath of San Diego Comic Con.  One such is an interview John Barrowman did with theTVaddict, discussing a lot of the things he was doing at the convention and the various areas of cult fandom he has now infiltrated thanks to Doctor Who, Torchwood and Arrow.

The most interesting part for Doctor Who fans, however, might perhaps be his discussion about his ideas for a spin-off series starring his character, Captain Jack Harkness, and Alex Kingston's River Song.

Talking to TVaddict, he said,
I’d like to see the two of them prior to their lives crossing in some time realm where they actually meet up without the Doctors or anything like that and they are rogue heroes. Kind of like what Star Trek did in the very beginning, going around and saving civilisations without trying to get too involved, but they always get involved! They always do the wrong thing but for the right reasons and succeed.
He also indicated that if such a show were to  get off the ground there would be a lot of room for further exploring these two characters in their relationship with each other, stand-offish to begin with, but forced to work together through various circumstances.

I have to confess, whilst the idea is clearly nascent at best, and features a core conceit which has already been done to death in science fiction without any reason to believe this will do it differently enough to merit its existence, I'd quite like to see what Captain Jack and River made of each other, what stories they might swap about the Doctor and how they would use their fairly unique approaches to action and adventure to solve the situations they came across or were put in.  I bet there would also be a fair amount of jealousy between them as well, which could create some interesting dramatic tensions.

Of course all this is strictly hypothetical.  Barrowman was quick to stress that he isn't the one who gets to decide if this will happen or not, nor is there any mention of him having formally pitched the idea to the BBC who do.  But it's clear that he loves this character and is itching for a chance to play him again and as fans, we always like to explore the possibilities of the fiction we so love.  The what if questions are never far from our lips and this one, like the idea of the Paternoster Group spin-off, is too good to pass up.  Hopefully Barrowman will think about his ideas in more detail, or someone from the BBC will have heard about them and want to follow them up a little more thoroughly.  It might never get to be a full spin-off, but there's a decent story in there somewhere and it might be nice if it saw the light of day somehow.

What do you think?  Is this a good idea with heaps of potential or are you already sick to death of Captain Jack, River Song, or both?  If it ever were to become a reality, what sorts of stories would you like it to tell?  I'd be keen to know your thoughts.

Ugh. Fanfiction of the most adolescent kind. Surely the BBC would have better sense.

I myself would love to see a mini series with the Doctor and River of 4 or 5 episodes with one story kinda like children of earth and hey Jack can tag along too :)

I think there should be a one-off episode just to see what it would be like, and then they wait for the reviews before they go ahead and commission a full series.
