Benedict Cumberbatch to play The Master for Doctor Who 50th anniversary?

You thought it was a good idea, I thought it was a good idea, my cat thought it was a good idea, in fact there is almost no Doctor Who fan who didn't like the idea, and now the Radio Times are coming out in support of Benedict Cumberbatch playing The Master for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary.

To be honest I didn't really like John Simms incarnation of the Master, there was something missing, perhaps I remember and love Roger Dalagos interpretation, he is certainly a classic character I always want to watch, everyone since seems a lightweight!

Apparently Doctor Who insiders say Cumberbatch, 35, is being lined up for the role and is likely to take on Matt Smith’s Doctor as the show celebrates its half-century in 2013, according to The Express (who haven't got a track record of getting it right, and even if they do, they didn't suggest it first!)

Cumberbatch has shown he is not averse to playing sci-fi villains, having landed a role as the nemesis in the second instalment in JJ Abramss Star Trek movie reboot.

but since its all speculation its not worth getting worked up about. hope simm comes back for the regeneration, though.

I like how this was edited by a moderator yet "fucking" is still uncensored. No need to be that harsh, he's certainly not a c***, but I don't think it would work if he was on Doctor Who.

People don't want benedict to play the master, they want the Sherlock he plays to be the master. I say keep him far away, he has already expressed how he thinks he's too good for doctor who unless he's the doctor. He's a pompous sod.

Well I vote no only because I hope he replaces Matt when he leaves. It will never happen but Cumberbatch would make an excellent Doctor.

I am so fed up with geekdom. Nothing ever makes you c*nts happy! I swear to God, they could ressurect William Hartnel from a freezers in the depths of the Beeb for this 50th special and you would bitch that hes to old. Please for once accept that something could be good.

Firstly, isn't it Delgado not Dalagos? :)
Seconldy, as far as every TV sci-fin type fan was concerned, wasn't Simm just  Sam Tyler?  Cos that is what he was most remembered for.  Surely we'd have to have an open mind, typecasting and all that.
Cumberbatch is an excellent actor and I'm sorry to have missed his Frankenstein play, but he's been recognised as being excellent - Smaug?  Villain in Star Trek?  Not just bit parts for a c***.
My opinion is that he'd be great, but then so would James Nesbitt.

"Doctor Who insiders" sounds suspiciously like "sources close to" which probably means "the writer of the original Express article". Don't get me wrong, Cumberbatch would make an incredible Master or Doctor, but it's just fantasty at the moment. Schrodinger's Casting, perhaps?

I don't get people who type cast actors. By their logic Colin Baker can only be  Commander Maxil, Frema Agyeman can only be Adeola Oshodi and Karen Gillan can only be the Soothsayer.
