Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Celebratory Trailer Analysis

Storyboard of the Trailer
So the just launched 50th Anniversary trailer was awesome, yes? But how many things did you manage to pick out? Why not go back and give another look to double check.

Below is a visual trailer analysis I have been working on (with a bit of help) for the past few hours and includes most, if not all, of the references in the trailer. Did you get them all? Did I miss anything that you got or make a mistake? Let us know!

UPDATE 1: Added several more labels, with thanks to those who have pointed them out. There are still two things that have had a couple of suggestions but still unidentified. Firstly, on the 5th picture, there is a computer just above the pub sign. Secondly, on the 2rth, there is a device sticking out of Matt's shoulder. What could these be?
(Please click to enlarge)

How closely were you listening to it? Who did you hear echoing 11's speech?

obviously the Doctor is The Ageless Stranger. It's the only thing that would make sense.

FINALLY we see Rose, sort of. Is that Donna's face I see peeking out behind Rose's silhouette??
Also the face at the end looks to me like someone regenerating, no?

Thank you I've been waiting for the break down!

brilliant work Combom - a few in there that I missed! in the last one, just to the right, I reckon that dark circle is Five's cricket ball - and I never spotted the misplaced finger!

very very good i didnt get that many

Wasn't that McGann echoing Smith's voice? Or is it just me trying to desperately make Eight appear anywhere/anywhen in the Who Universe again?

This is a great article, regardless! Well done!

I think the face reflected in the sphere is that of Susan, not Sarah Jane

Great stuff combon

I've spotted a few more
Slide 1:
- Bicycle (also from unearthly child)

Slide 3:
- Top left, next to hieronymus' mask, are the head dress/hats of the white and black guardians (a white bird and a black bird).
- The pram and the dummy are also from totter's yard
- Is that a piece of the key to time below the words "robot santa mask"

Slide 4:
- I think this scene has become the third doctor's workshop (~inferno?).
- There is a tape recorder / player from the empty child to the right of the pub sign.

Slide 5:
- Above the Dalek's plunger arm is an oval with three circles on it. I think it's a bit of Dalek set (from their original story)

Slide 6:
- The part labelled key to time is also the key to time locator

Slide 17:
-Left of the Voc robot's head, there is an object going off screen. I think it is the seventh doctor's tardis key (ghost light)

Slide 22:
- I think the carved face looks more Aztec to me

Slide 23:
- There is a another key to time segment in the lower right near the building (so that is two in that screenshot alone).
- There is a little yeti statuette on matt's right shoulder (on our left)

A few things I can't work out:
slide 14:
- what are the reflections on the sphere held by sarah jane?
- what is the destroyed building next to big ben (its not the house of parliament as it is too tall)
slide 20:
- near the cyberman's gun, what is that "disc and tube" (part of 9/10 tardis time column?)

While I can't dispute that the oval with the three circles on the back wall in Totter's Yard was in the original Dalek serial, it was definitely seen in Asylum of the Daleks: http://imageshack.us/a/img189/2665/neec.png

Nice work. www.doctorwho.tv also says the Fob Watch (Utopia/Family of Blood) is in there too, but I'm not sure where.

John Smith said...

The 4th Doctor's burgundy scarf from his last season appears to be draped over something white as the camera pushes in the first scene just below the original series console to your left as you look at it. And that Dalek control panel on the back wall, the oval with 3 black circular half spheres.

Slide #4 - at Hartnell's shoulder is a gasmask on the wall - Empty Child?

Geoff Owen said...

It's not Donna peeking around Rose, it's Paul McGann.

Oswin said...

I'm not quite sure, but I heard different voices echoing the Doctor's statements: at one point I heard Colin Baker (!!) and at another I heard Billie Piper.

InTheCave said...

I think you might be talking about the pub sign from The Cloven Hoof from "The Daemons" but am not certain.

Mike said...

It's definitely Sarah Jane.

Mike said...

Come on, guys! The silhouette at the end is the Brigade Leader!

captinfranko said...

the policeman at the start is John Hurt!

InTheCave said...

McCoy's "Ghostlight" TARDIS key can be seen above D84. http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/9797/qwhx.png

InTheCave said...

It really isn't. Makes much more sense that it is Hurt with that bandolier-thing. Not sure what's up with his right hand, though.

InTheCave said...

I also see a Yeti figurine on Smith's right shoulder in slide 24 above.
Are those bits of Web (of Fear) floating about Clara??

Nod64 said...

Could that be Peter Capaldi in the stars?

Connor Cooledge said...

I deffo heard davidson's voice under smiths

John Smith said...

The Fourth Doctor's other scarf, which I will refer to as the Burgundy one...

ziadada said...

Fantastic work!
At about 0:07 on the left I think you can also see the mask of one of the automata from "Girl in the fireplace"

McGann posted on Twitter about Recording the same thing as Smith. He didn't reveal what it was being said or what it was for. We now know.

Just because it intrigued me, I went and figured out "when" that Rose is from. Season 2, The Satan's Pit. Did a Google search for it.

The sonic in slide 4 looks like the one Ten replaced Nine's with. The button looks flat, rather than the bulkier one that Nine had and Ten had in his first season.

Billy said...

Is that a ring at the bottom center of the last picture? (directly beneath the "11")

pcjonathan said...

No, that's part of the BBC One logo forming.

pcjonathan said...

No, that's just part of the actual pub sign (the title).

Ryan Power Ring Kirwan said...

You missed McGann's Screwdriver, it's after Tom's. The one they close up on

Beatrice said...

Oh, I didn't know! So it is him! *-* Gah! *-*

Mercy Reborn 2 said...

i think they did voice overlays

Mercy Reborn 2 said...

i think matt is standing on a cliff and i think the face carved on the cliff is a roman

Mercy Reborn 2 said...

theres a cheetah people costume on a wall

stephendowell said...

The Policeman in slide 1 is John Hurt.

Luke Foord said...

I think you're on your own here.

stephendowell said...

I think I am! :)

EB3 said...

Could the face in the cliff be the Face of Boe?

Alice Khromenko said...

The Mystery Man right before Tennant is Martha from "Last of the Time Lords" or "The Doctor's Daughter". No?

wasn't that lightning the masters from "the end of time" when he was unstable and half dead.

Time Dad said...

Isn't that craggy/cliffy rocky mountain (to our right in the background of the David Tennant shot) Peladon?

Caitlin said...

I think it looks way more like the early brigadier (or is counterpart from the alternate universe in Inferno)

Michelle said...

In the 18th slide, isn't that Davros on the right side with electricity coming out of his hands?

Michelle said...

Oh, and SUPER well done! Hadn't seen anything like this yet and it's great!

I think there are at least 4 echoes. I've tried to listen carefully but I'm sure, those are 4 different voices. The first at 0.11 is a vary deep voice, the second at 0.21 is a younger man's voice. Finally at 0.35 there are the third and the fourth. The fourth one is without a doubt a famale voice. I can't tell for sure the third is different from the second and first ones, but the other voices are all different so I think we can be quite sure of this. I'm sorry for my english, it's not my language.

Slide 3 has a few things from Hartnell's era in the foreground. I think there's a machine from the Keys of Marinus, a box from the Giants story, a bit of the Meddling Monk's castle, and some puzzle squares from the Celestial Toymaker. Then it sneakily morphs into a very similar but different image.

In slide 5 there's a few Troughton things close to the Tardis. Snowshoes, a net and a crab monster.

In other slides, Eldrad's stone hand is beside k9, Sarah Jane is holding an Auton sphere, the big mountain on Tennant's right is the Royal Mountain of Peladon, the stone head is the priest from The Aztecs, and that is the Brigade Leader aka the Brigadier with the gun

kazza said...

P.S. I did mean to say... thank you so much for putting this post together.

Also, the face in the last slide looks like one of the liony dimension jumping people from the e-space stories in Tom Baker's era. The black spot on the same slide is the time lord's Eye of Harmony black hole.

kazza said...

P.S.S. in the last slide there's something that looks like a ring, it's the space station from the Tom Baker story Ark in Space. And David Tennant has a lot of things behind him at knee level - skyscrapers. And there's something in front of the Golden Gate.

I was hoping the man in the bandoleer would be Jamie McCrimmion. The longest running companion. 113 episodes.

PCJ said...

I believe the first voice is Peter Davison. I'm not sure on the second one but to me it sounds a little bit like John Simm. The Female voice is Rose and the one before the dalek I think could be McGann.
