Doctor Who Awesomeness — "I'm Rory Williams"

Sorry, we have no idea who created these. As always, we're happy to add the names if told.

In case you can't figure out the second one, it's Rory with his head implanted on a Rick Roll.

Scavenger Hunt Videos for Starz's Torchwood: Miracle Day

NOTE: There are new posts below this one.

Starz, which has co-produced Miracle Day with BBC Worldwide, is slowly releasing one-shot featurettes of each character in the fourth series of Torchwood. So far we've got Jack and Esther on Youtube, while the others are exclusively available on individual sites. Follow these links for all the videos you need!

UPDATE #5: Oswald Danes found. The collection is complete. PCJonathan is currently uploading the Captain Jack and Esther ones onto a UK-friendly site, so stay patient. The others should work in the UK already, or at least that's my understanding.

This io9 exclusive featurette reveals how Captain Jack has stumbled onto the brink of a tragic mistake.

The next video was given to USA Today and features Esther Dummond, played by Alexa Havins.

These videos are only available on these sites (UK compatible):
Thanks go out to Joe Adalian, west coat editor of Vulture, for pointing out his exclusive video; and thanks as well to Reverse the Polarity Productions for the Oswald one.

Doctor Who Series Seven Scheduling Steven Moffat Speaks

Private Eye are claiming Doctor Who is heading for a 2012 hiatus, but the BBC has stated that Series 7 is a done deal. But they haven't actually said when it'll appear, so SFX asked Steven Moffat what's going on.

Here's what the Moff had to say:
"Okay, here it is – the best answer you can have. I don't know. If I did know, I wouldn't tell you. When I DO know, what I know will change, so I won't really know then either. And then it will change again, so I still won't really know. And if, secretly, I'd really known all along, I'd still be telling you I don't know, because everything I said I knew, could be wrong, so I'd never really have known in the first place.
I should point out that Private Eye is a humour magazine, and anything originating from there is to be taken with a large pinch of salt! Of course, other sources are asking this too, but Private Eye is the most obvious. Ultimately, I have faith in Series 7 for 2012, and understand that this creates free publicity for Private Eye. :)

John Barrowman Open to a Return to Doctor Who

TV news site Zap2it briefly interviewed John Barrowman on the set of Torchwood: Miracle Day and revealed that Captain Jack Harkness could always return to Doctor Who.
"I've always said that if I'm asked to go back to 'Doctor Who,' I'll go at the drop of a hat. That's where Captain Jack got his beginnings. And it's already been discussed."
Barrowman says that both "Torchwood" creator Russell T Davies and current "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat have talked about the possibility of a return for Jack . . .
"It's in the cards, but who knows whether it will happen?" says Barrowman, quick to add that his character does have special ties to David Tennant's version of the Doctor. "I like Matt Smith. He brings his own quirkiness to it... When a new Doctor starts, everybody goes along for the journey because they love the show. But then you attach yourself to that Doctor. There's a whole new generation who are now attached to Matt, and rightly so.... but David Tennant is my Doctor."
Speaking more generally about his work in the US, Barrowman discussed the ties that keep him bound to the UK.
"I run myself like a business, and I enjoy the work I do. Of course I have ambition to work more in the U.S., but I will never turn my back on the U.K. and what I do there.
"I've always said that I would never just give up and leave the U.K. to come and seek work over here, but if work brings me over here, that's a different story. There are plans in the future for me to branch out a little more in this market, because, hey, you need a big swashbuckling gay man to do things, don't ya?"

More About Max Tresillan The Cravats Torchwood

In the 1980s, I was a fan of a band called The Cravats, and like being a music fan, my love for them remained, but I moved on. A friend called round, and it resulted in this post. The actor Max Tresillian is from the band The Cravats, but in the band he was called The Shend.

Today I received email from my friend Darren about a video. Have a look . . .

And here's a track by The Cravats.

Doctor Who Obituary — Roy Skelton

We've only just posted this, but it deserves elaboration.

The initial news about Roy Skelton as reported by BBC News.
Roy Skelton, voice of TV show Rainbow's Zippy & George, has died aged 79. He was also one of the original voices of the Dr Who Daleks
The full BBC News article focuses most of his Rainbow career, but the Doctor Who News Page reminds us of some of his most familiar roles alongside, or rather against, the Doctor.
Born in Manchester in July 1931, Skelton's first involvement with Doctor Who came when he provided voices for the Monoids in the 1966 William Hartnell serial The Ark. He returned to the series later that year to provide voices to the first ever Cybermen in Hartnell's finale as the Doctor, The Tenth Planet. It was in 1967 that he first took on the role he became most associated with on Doctor Who, when he voiced the Daleks in Evil of the Daleks, lining up against Second Doctor Patrick Troughton. He then provided Dalek voices right through until their final classic series appearance in 1988 Remembrance of the Daleks, starring Sylvester McCoy. He also made the occasional on-screen appearance, such as briefly playing the body of the Spiridon Wester, whose voice he had provided, when the character became visible on his death in the Jon Pertwee serial Planet of the Daleks in 1973.
Skelton's ability to provide Dalek voices in different registers which he could switch between as recording was in progress enabled a variety of characterisation and conversation to be played in Dalek scenes.
For instance, he voiced this out-of-control Dalek in a blooper from The Five Doctors, found on the TARDIS Newsroom.

And here's a mash-up of his work from Doctor Who with "Zippy" from Rainbow.

BBC America's Anglophenia blog has a lovely tribute.

Dalek voice actor Roy Skelton dies aged 79 Doctor Who

Actor and singer Roy Skelton, best known for voicing puppets George and Zippy in the popular children's programme Rainbow, has died aged 79, from a stroke.

Skelton voiced the Daleks in Doctor Who from 1967 to 1988, as well as the Cybermen and the Krotons.

In 2002, he guest-starred in the audio drama Sarah Jane Smith: Test Of Nerve.

He reprised the role of Zippy in 2008 for the BBC1 series Ashes to Ashes.

Doctor Who Fourth Dimension Mystery Solved — And No One Cares

The mystery lasted for weeks, over a month, with italicized text in the official BBC site's Fourth Dimension page apparently hinting at some exciting future plot. The BBC even released an exciting secret video called Analysis Lessons (see above), which commenter Dregyn points out is an anagram of "Lonely Angels". Visiting this related link brings up some login-encoded restriction.
Person 1: "All the secrets you seek can be found here on the Webb.
Person 2: "We found your message! You're alive! But what secrets 'D'you mean my friend?
Person 1: "I mean I glimpsed him! And may the gods help him. Perhaps you can."
All of this secrecy: and what did we get? Cryptic clues whose resolution is as pointless as the clues were intriguing. The hidden messages weren't for any plotline or online adventure; instead, the Doctor Who team was proud to announce that theatre company Punchdrunk will open another Doctor Who live show, titled "The Crash of the Elysium", as if Doctor Who Live hasn't satisfied us.

In a remarkable turn of events, "Elysium" is a live stage show made specifically for children aged 6 to 12. Parents won't even be admitted unless they attend the family show. The show runs at the Manchester International Festival from June 30th to July 17th. Booking and event information is available at the MIF site.

Was it appropriate for the BBC to mislead fans about this Fourth Dimension victory? Does this just underscore fans' gullibility? Could there still be some vague connection to the series? At the very least, we know for sure that children aged 6 to 12 weren't the ones eagerly following the italicized code.

Doctor Who Science Fact: Martian Base Discovered

Compelling evidence.
Rumour has it a secret martian base has been found on Mars, and it just may have been! David Martines announced on YouTube he has discovered an anomaly which is clearly a secret Martian base, just by using Google Maps on the Martian landscape!

As io9 commenters explain, it might be anything from a few stray pixels to an Ice Warrior hideout. So is it alien or NASA? Is it time to start worrying? Here is a video of the fuss.

Personally, I've ordered a couple of rolls of tin foil and instructed Team Combom on how to use them in defense of the alien menace.

So now we're safe from alien mind control, but is it time to start eating each others' brains? I am already peckish. Mmmmm . . . brains . . .

Doctor Who's Colin Baker Celebrates his 68th Birthday Today!

Colin Baker was born in London on 8th June 1943, and so is celebrating his 68th birthday today. All of us at Team Combom wish him a very happy birthday, and as a birthday gift Combom has agreed to never make rude jokes about him ever again… probably.

To celebrate his birthday, Colin has invited his greatest friends to sing the following song about Doctor Who:

Doctor Who for Immersive Theatre Show

Doctor Who fans are to be plunged into one of the Time Lord's adventures in an "immersive" theatre show created by the acclaimed company Punchdrunk, who are famous for transforming entire buildings into mysterious locations which audiences explore as the action unfolds around them.

They had kept details of their latest show The Crash of the Elysium, which opens in Salford on 30th June, secret, but it has now been revealed that will be based around the BBC time traveller.

The Sun Get It Wrong Again Doctor Who

This is copied straight from The Sun [additions by me].

Plans for a new Dr Who series are in crisis as the show approaches its 50th birthday, The Sun can reveal. Boss Steven Moffat wants to make two "specials" of the hit instead of a long run.

[Yesterday a 13-part Series 7 was confirmed, plus a Christmas special.]

Rumours about the BBC1 show's future circulated after one of its three main producers, Piers Wenger, quit last month.

[Just because someone left for another job doesn't mean anything. People do leave for other jobs. Always have, always will.]

The Beeb yesterday played down ideas of a rift between Moffat - who axed the Daleks - and BBC controller Danny Cohen. A BBC source said: "Steven's the boss. At this stage we have no idea if there will be two episodes or if there will be ten."

[We have already covered why the Daleks are taking a break, and it sounds like a good reason to me!]

Bosses have commissioned 14 new episodes with Matt Smith as the timelord. But they've been given no timeline as to when they will air, despite 2012 being Dr Who's 50th anniversary.

[It's NOT "timelord", it's Time Lord. 2013 is the Doctor's 50th anniversary, NOT 2012. Don't you just despise amateurs? It seems the gutter press can't even use Wikipedia. Quote— "Doctor Who first appeared on BBC television at 17:15 GMT on 23 November 1963." If The Sun look at their masthead, they can see the date. Here is a calculator so they can work out the 50th anniversary. And we don't have a transmission date for Series 7 yet, as the BBC don't work them out a year ahead, but as always it should premier around Easter 2012.]

Terry Pratchett to Write for Doctor Who Series 7?

UPDATE: At this point, we should probably clarify that it seems Terry Pratchett actually was denying a meeting with Steven Moffat. Everyone seems to have jumped the gun. Sorry 'bout that.

After Neil Gaiman's wildly enjoyable "The Doctor's Wife", no doubt Steven Moffat was begging the acclaimed author to join the Doctor Who team for at least another episode; but Gaiman has declined, for good reason.

And who better to replace him than friend and fellow author—even co-author for the splendid Good Omens—Sir Terry Pratchett?

I could go on forever about the Discworld series, but in a phrase: he's done for the fantasy genre what Douglas Adams did for science fiction. And it seems likely that, much like John Fay, he's writing a script for Doctor Who.

On Twitter last night Pratchett spontaneously tweeted the following messages, defending himself against non-existent rumours. For those who can't read between the lines, he's admitting to everything he's denying.
@terryandrob: A meeting of minds with gentlemen we cannot mention about a project we cannot discuss. However, a good day all round.
@terryandrob: No! No! We absolutely 100% did not meet @steven_moffat today. But now we’ve denied it…
@terryandrob: We reiterate; we DID NOT meet or talk to or phone or Skype or send letters or emails or carrier pigeons to @steven_moffat
@terryandrob: Further more, our people are not talking to @steven_moffat people, okay?? Seriously.
Before we enter the perilous territory of speculation, let's preface these rumours, and all those to come, with some caution. Steven Moffat's does not solely work on Who; even if Pratchett were writing a script for Moffat, it might be for Sherlock or some as of yet unknown production. Perhaps he's just planning on a non-television project, anything from a promotional appearance to a Doctor Who New Series Adventure. After all, fantasy author Michael Moorcock wrote The Coming of the Terraphiles last year.

If, however, Terry Pratchett is writing for Series 7, this is the best news since, well, Neil Gaiman's script was announced. If not, it still seems like something more than just a cuppa with the Moff.

So will he be credited as "Terry Pratchett" or "Sir Terence David John Pratchett"?
